Printing, Scanning, Copying: Home

How to use the printers in the library: everything you need to know.

The library's printers

The library contains two printers. One prints in black and white, and the other prints in color. Both are available to MSOE students, faculty, and staff who are connected to the MSOE wireless network.

The printers are located on the second floor near the main library entrance. You'll see them against the wall just to the left of the Schroeder conference room, across from the circulation desk.

Two printers. On the left, the color printer; on the right, black and white.

How to print

First, you'll need to set up the job on your computer.

  1. Make sure your device is connected to the MSOE wireless network (NOT MSOE guest).
  2. Go to File > Print on your computer.
  3. On the print settings screen, make sure that the selected printer is on the AD network -- it should look something like "printers.ad.msoe.edu".
  4. Change any settings needed for your job. You can print in color or black and white, landscape or portrait, single or double sided. You may also select options like a corner staple or hole punch.
  5. Click print.

Once you've sent your job to the printer, you'll need to log onto the printer with your MSOE ID. You can do this quickly and easily by holding your MSOE ID card up to the card reader. Or, you can log in with your MSOE ID and password on the touch screen on each printer.

Once you're logged in, you'll see a number of options. Tap "Print All" to quickly release all print jobs you've sent to the printer. (This is the quickest and easiest way to just get things printed.) Or, you can release print jobs one at a time by tapping "Print Release" and viewing a list of print jobs you've sent.

The printer should complete your print job shortly.

Printing in color

In order to print color copies, you will need to have money in your Raider account. Color copies cost 30 cents per page.

  • You can add money to your account here. (You will need to register the first time if you haven't already.)
  • You can learn more about the Raider plan here.

You can print in black and white on the color printer. However, in order to do so without a charge, you must send the job over as a black and white print job from your computer's print dialog box. (It's probably easiest just to use the black and white printer for black and white jobs.)

Printing on other paper

The printers are pre-stocked with white letter-size copy paper. If you want to use different paper (different quality, color, or size) you'll need to load it into the printer using the bypass tray. (Please do not open the printer trays to add/remove paper yourself; ask at the front desk if the printer needs to be refilled.)

We do have white 11 x 17 copy paper on hand for larger jobs. However, if you need a different color, quality, or size for your print job you'll need to supply the paper yourself.

The IT department offers a guide to printing on your own paper here.

Scanning

You may scan on the printers using your MSOE ID.

  1. Log into the printer using the touch screen. Enter your MSOE ID and password, or scan your ID card to quickly log in.
  2. Tap "Scan".
  3. You may modify your settings on the next screen. If you don't change any settings, the resulting scan will be sent right to your MSOE email address. If you want to scan double-sided, change the orientation or paper size, or scan at a different resolution or color mode, tap "Settings" and adjust to your desired settings.
  4. Place the original document in the machine. You may scan a stack of letter-size paper by placing it in the tray on top of the machine, front side facing up. (Make sure your pages aren't folded or stapled in any way.) Or, you may scan single pages of any size by lifting the top of the machine and placing the document face-down on the glass, aligned with the top-left corner. If you scan using the glass, you may scan more than one page per job by checking off "Additional Pages" on the Scan Details screen.
  5. Hit Start. Your scan job will complete automatically. (If you are scanning more than one page using the glass, you'll need to hit "start" after placing each page, and tap "finish" when you've scanned all pages. The screen will then instruct you to press "start" to send the file to your email address.

The black and white printer is capable of scanning in color.

Copying

You may also make simple copies using the printers in the library.

  1. Log in to the printer using your MSOE ID and password or by swiping your ID card.
  2. Tap "Device functions", and then "copy".
  3. Adjust any desired settings.
  4. Place your document in the printer. To copy a single page, lift the top off the printer and place your document face-down on the glass, align it in the upper-left corner. To copy a stack of pages, place them in the tray on top of the machine, facing up. (Make sure they aren't folded or stapled in any way.)
  5. Press Start and your job will complete.

Troubleshooting

Here are a few of the most common problems we encounter with printing in the library:

I followed all the instructions but nothing is coming out of the printer.

  • Most likely, you don't have enough money in your Raider account to cover the cost of your color print job. We suggest trying the black and white printer, or you can try adding enough money to your account to cover the job.
  • If you are trying to print in black and white on the color printer, make sure the job is sent over using the black and white setting -- if it is sent as a color job it will not go through for free, even if the document contains only black ink.

I put 11 x 17 paper in the bypass tray to print on larger paper, but nothing is happening.

  • Make sure your print job was sent to the printer as an 11 x 17 job in the settings box on your computer.
  • Make sure that there is 11 x 17 paper in the bypass tray, and that both parts of the bypass tray are folded out. (The tray must be folded down, and then another piece flips out to support the length of the paper.)

When I log on to the printer, I don't see my print job.

The printer is out of paper or staples.

Please ask a staff member at the front desk for assistance.

I'm running into other problems.

Ask at the front desk for help. We'll do our best to figure it out, but we may need to refer you to IT in some cases for further assistance.
