References, Citations, and Style Guides

A guide outlining the resources available to help students, faculty, and staff manage citations, references, formatting, and more.

At some point, one of your instructors will likely require you to write a paper following a style guide. You'll also be required to find, use, and properly cite sources backing up your arguments. In this guide, we'll cover these topics:

  • Reference management: How do you track, organize, and document the articles, books, and other references you use in your research?
  • Style guides: How do you follow specific formats to ensure your writing is well-documented and clear/easy to read?
  • Writing support: What resources are available to help you in your writing?
  • Thesis and capstone reports: What process should you follow to write, revise, and publish your final project here at MSOE?
