St. Patrick's Day at MSOE

by Denise Gergetz on 2022-03-17T08:04:56-05:00 | 0 Comments

One of the oldest traditions at MSOE is celebrating St. Patrick's Day, so for this month's post we are sharing some history from past celebrations. The MSOE Archives has a whole collection related to these celebrations (MSOE Archival Collection 9), with materials dating back to the 1930s, including some documents placing the first celebration of the holiday at MSOE in 1929.

Many of the early activities were sponsored by the MSOE Branch American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). Events held during celebrations have included an election of a student to serve as St. Pat, dances, parades, skits, and even beard growing contests. More recent years have added all-school carnivals, scavenger hunts, and egg drop contests. The image on the left shows St. Pat and his court participating in Milwaukee's St. Patrick's Day Parade.

One of the longest running events that takes place during St. Pat's Week is the Proclamation Signing. Each year MSOE's President signs control of the School to the year's chosen St. Patrick (or King Patrick in some earlier years). The photograph to the left shows MSOE's 2nd President Karl Werwath with the elected St. Pat for 1952.
