A libguide on Generative AI models

AI Privacy and Intellectual Property

A major point of concern around AI is privacy. Our data can be mined, stolen, or given freely to major corporations and other entities. But how AI will play a role in this is still developing. AI will enable more and more areas of our lives to be collected, cataloged, and used to whatever purpose is deemed necessary by the entity that has it whether that is with good intentions or bad. Privacy and theft of Intellectual Property continue to be a cause for contention among the population. Below are several articles that explain the arguments and how we might better protect our information and creative works.

What is Intellectual Property? According to the World Intellectual Property Organization:

"Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

IP is protected in law by, for example, patentscopyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish"
