Football at MSOE

Yes, you read that right, there was a football team at MSOE in the early years of the school.  We often get asked about past athletics at MSOE, so for this first Archives Blog post we thought we would share some football history.

The School of Engineering of Milwaukee had a football team, known as the Engineers, from 1919-1921. The Engineers played against teams from other schools in the region including Lake Forest, Marquette Academy, Steven’s Point Normal, Valparaiso, and St. Louis University.

It is likely that the SOE only had a football team for these few years.  We have not been able to find any evidence in the archives that football continued at the SOE after 1921.  An article from a 1926 issue of Electric Sparks stated that, "We had a wonderful football team 1919 to 1921, but for several years now, we have been without any representative athletics"

The picture at the top of this page shows the 1920 team.

The 1920 EMF yearbook publication dedicated several pages to the football team including the athletics graphic on the left and these features:

Football, pages 368-369

The Electric Sparks, an early school publication reported on the games from 1919 to 1921.View these features from the November 1, 1921 Issue of Electric Sparks for accounts of two games held that season and for the team's record:

"Engineers Take First Game from Lake Forest, 20-7"

"Engineers Beat Great Lakes 34-19"

Team Scores as of November 1, 1921
