In August 2021, the renovated and expanded Hermann Viets Tower opened for MSOE student residents. For this post, we decided to share some history of the building before the update, when it was known as the Roy W. Johnson Residence Hall.

In the early 1960s the need for on-campus housing was identified and with the help of an initiative from Roy W. Johnson, a member of MSOE's Board of Regents, planning for a residence hall began. This new residence hall, along with other campus improvements would continue to help MSOE grow as an education institution. In the Report of the President: 1964, Second President Karl Werwath stated: "The Roy W. Johnson Residence Hall will add considerably to the stature of this institution. It will create an atmosphere where seriousness of purpose prevails. It will be a sanctuary for study, a domicile with the environment to help students achieve a superior education."

The Roy W. Johnson Residence Hall opened in 1965. The building served as the first residence hall in MSOE History.
