Managing your Google Scholar Author Profile

A Google Scholar Author Profile is a tool to help you manage your own professional information, impact, and citations. You may see this referred to as an ORCID ID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) or a persistent identifier. This tool allows you to keep your work organized, keep your professional work in one place, and allow others to find you amongst the many other researchers in the field.

To set up a profile you will need a Google Account and to be logged in.

Setting up your account:

  • Sign into your Google account
  • in the upper left hand corner - go to My Profile

You will be prompted by Google to create a generic profile. Google will ask you to fill out more information and verify your email.

Next it will ask you to select any references that you have already published. If you don't yet have any published articles leave the boxes blank.

Google will then ask you how you would like to manage your profile going forward. You can chose to have it automatically update your profile with new citations or you can ask to review the submissions first. This is also the spot where you can chose to leave your profile searchable to the public or keep it private. If you choose to make your profile public you can also have Google send you email updates related to your work or get notified anytime your articles are cited.

Now your profile is set up. From this screen you can add a profile picture or edit anything you have added to your profile. To manually add a citation, add a group of citations, or configure article updates to your list click the plus button in the grey bar section of the profile.
