Google Scholar

A how-to guide on searching Google Scholar effectively.

Saving Results

Google Scholar allows you to save and organize your citations. See below for ways to personalize your searches. To save things in Google Scholar you will need a Google account and be logged in.

Your Google Scholar Library:

Once you are logged in you'll be able to see your library in the upper right hand corner.  This is where your saved items will be stored.

Starring Articles:

Under each article in the results list will be a blank white star. When you click the star it turns blue and signifies that you have saved that article. When you select the star, Google will ask you what library to add the item to. You can create a new library or select an established one.

Once you have added an article to your library you can go in and assign labels to keep things organized. Go to your library where you will see the list of citations you have saved. There are a few ways to create a label. You can select the Manage Labels... section on the left hand side or you can click on the label tag underneath the individual article. It will then prompt you to either create a brand new label or select from an already established list. After each title you will see a grey tag appear - telling you what you have label(s) you have given to that document.

To edit a label:

Click manage labels in the upper left.

A page will appear that lists out previously made labels as well as a button to create a new one. You can choose to edit a current label by clicking the pencil icon to the right of the label title.

When you select Create a new label - a box will pop up asking for the name of your new label and a create button. Once you have decided on a new label name click create and you're all set!

Your new label will appear in the main list and you can start assigning tags to your saved citations. If you need to delete a label click the X next to the pencil icon.
